Adobe Photoshop – Grunge Border Effect

Submitted by Administrator on August 9, 2010 Website: www.tipclique.com

This Photoshop training will show you how to use a mask to create a grungy border or frame around you image. This technique will ensure that your image editing is non-destructive, as it will only be applied to the mask.

Grunge Border Final

Step 1:

You will need to have the image on its own layer. If your image is on the background layer, you can simply double click it in the layers palette to create a layer.

Step 2:

Using the rectangular marquee tool, select the area of the image you want to add the border.

Step 3:

Click the Add layer mask button at the bottom of the layers palette

Add layer mask

Step 4:

From the Filter menu select Brush Strokes > Spatter. When the dialog box appears click the 'New effect layer' button 3 times.

Now click the ocean ripple filter, and click OK.

I added other effects to this image, but the grunge border is possible with the few simple steps above. You can use other filters on the mask to get different effects. The filters I find to be best are Spatter, Sprayed Strokes, Glass, and Ocean Ripple. Use them in any combination to get the result you want.
