This is really nice, especially because it’s so easy. Do you have any suggestions for how to make a simple black icon or letter appear to be either carved into the surface of this button or embedded within the button? When I layer a black drawing over the button, it just looks “pasted on”. How can I make it look more natural without losing any readability?
November 14th, 2006 at 1:20 pmHi tempus42,
I’m not very familiar with GIMP, but I just tried to create what you described and the only thing I was able to come up with is adding a drop shadow to the text with an offset for x, and y set to 1 or 2 pixels, and the blur set to the same. The color should be either white or light blue, and then just adjust the opacity after you apply the shadow. You can also set the text layer to overlay, then duplicate it, and set the duplicate to normal, and lower the opacity to around 50 to retain a bit of the orb look.

May 5th, 2007 at 12:43 amHi josher72,
It looks like the tutorial has been removed from it’s previous location, I will try to track down another tutorial with the same result.
I have replaced the previous tutorial with another that is fairly similar.
