First off I would like to state how I really enjoy and appreciate this site. However the feed back on this tutorial is not so positive.
December 14th, 2006 at 10:29 pmI went though each step in this tutorial, and found that it was a bit confusing and didn’t exactly explain clearly how to do things. For example in step three it wasn’t made clear in what mode you would be making the selection, is it in the channels? Or in the layer? Also there really wasn’t any need to go thought this process for selecting the hair not that I really understood the process of using the paint tool as a selection tool.
When I did the process in my way, I simply went into quick mask mode, and made my selection that way. If people need further instruction on how to do this feel free to email me. There were to many unnecessary steps. It took me about an hour to complete the tutorial, and about 10 min to create the same results using a different method. I just didn’t see the point in playing around with the curves, levels, channels, so on and so forth. You’ll find that step 7 also didn’t make any kind of sense.
The way I went about the task was I selected the hair suing quick mask mode, placed it in it own layer. Then I went into image adjustment variations, like in the tutorial, and that was that. It was done. Way simpler to do than what this tutorial instruct.
I guess that all.
What does every one else think?
Hi EmelisaR,
You are entirely correct. This result is possible with many variations, some of which do require fewer steps. The calculations section starting in step 3 for example is only one method for creating the selection of the hair. If you create the selection through a quick mask, or any other means that works fine also, and is generally much easier as you’ve stated. Step 7 does have some text in parentheses that I’m not sure what it was referring to, but the curves portion is only meant to give the hair more contrast and a more golden appearance, which can also be achieved through other routes. I’m glad you like the site and I appreciate your participation. I am currently working on a new design for the site and some code changes that I hope will make the site even better.
