Adobe Photoshop Tutorial - Selective Color

This Photoshop training will show you how to use Photoshop as your image editing program to add an adjustment layer to desaturate your image, and selectively reveal only the color you want in the areas you want. You can move your mouse over the image to see the image in full color if your browser supports it, Internet Explorer 6, and below do not.

Step 1:

Open the image on which you want to apply selective color.

Step 2:

Create an adjustment layer by selecting Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation from the menu, and click OK. When the saturation dialog appears, lower the saturation to -100.

Step 3:

Select the paint brush tool with black as the foreground color, and set the opacity to around 50%. Use a soft round brush, and set the size relative to the size of the area you want to bring color back in from the original image.

Step 4:

Paint over the areas where you want the color to show through. I started with the lips, and eyes. I then painted over the skin, and hair with the opacity set to around 10% and an increased brush size to add a little bit more color.

That is all there is to it. If you make any mistakes, you can switch the foreground color to white, and paint over the mistakes on the adjustment layer to fix them.
