Liquid Emergence - Angelina Jolie emerging from liquid
This tutorial will show you how to create the illusion of a face emerging from liquid. It will also teach you a cool method for shaping a selection using the liquify filter. You should have a basic understanding of how to work with layers for this tutorial.

Step 1:
Download this style and lighting effect, and install the style by dragging it into the Photoshop workspace, then install the lighting effect by placing the file in your lighting styles folder i.e. "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\Filters\Lighting Styles\". Download this image of Angelina Jolie, and open it in Photoshop. Select (layer > new > layer from background) from the menu, and click OK. Next select (layer > new > layer) from the menu and click OK. Drag the new layer below the layer of Angelina in the layers palette.
Step 2:
Set your foreground color to 20% gray and the background color to black. Select (filter > render > clouds) from the menu. Next select (filter > blur > gaussian blur) from the menu, and set the radius to 10, click OK. Next select (filter > sketch > chrome) from the menu, and set both the detail, and smoothness to the max of 10, and click OK. Next select (filter > distort > zigzag) from the menu, and set the amount to 100, the ridges to 6, and the style to pond ripples, and click OK. Next select (filter > distort > zigzag) from the menu again, and set the style to out from center, and click OK.
Select (layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation) from the menu, check the colorize box, set the hue to 215, and the saturation to 100, then click OK.

Next select (layer > new adjustment layer > levels) from the menu, and set the input values to 50, 1.00, and 170, and click OK.
Select the layer with Angelina Jolie. Drag the elliptical selection tool around the inside of the face.

Hit q on the keyboard to enter quick mask mode, then select (filter > liquify) from the menu, hold down the alt key so the cancel button switches to a reset button, and click it. Next check the show backdrop check box. The defaults should be set as indicated in the image below.

Now just drag the brush so the white portion lines up with inside the edges of the face, and click OK when finished. Now exit quick mask mode by pressing q on the keyboard again.
Press ctrl + j on the keyboard to create a new layer from the selection, then ctrl + click the thumbnail in the layers palette to create a selection, and choose (select > modify > contract) from the menu, and enter 5 as the value, then click OK. Press ctrl + j on the keyboard again to create another layer from this selection, then select the layer below it and select (filter > blur > gaussian blur) from the menu, and set the radius to 5, click OK. Next change the opacity to 50%. Now select the layer with the full image of Angelina Jolie just below the currently selected layer and set the blending mode to multiply, and the opacity to 50%.
![]()
Duplicate this layer via (layer > duplicate layer) from the menu, and change the blending mode to soft light.
Ctrl + click the thumbnail for the second layer from the top, select the top layer, and then select (layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation) from the menu, and click the colorize checkbox, set the hue to 215, and the saturation to 60. Select the layer below this adjustment layer, and apply the style you have downloaded from above, it should be located at the bottom of your styles palette.
Step 7:
Now select the very bottom layer, and select (filter > liquify) from the menu. in the show backdrop section set the layer for the use field to the very top image layer which should be 'Layer 3', and is the face of Angelina Jolie, set the mode to in front, and the opacity to 100%.

Now use the brush to drag the liquid material outward from inside the face so you get a ridge just outside of the face, once you have it the way you like click ok.
Select the bottom layer, then select (filter > render > lighting effects) from the menu and select the liquid highlights you've downloaded from above for the style, then click OK.
![]()
Press ctrl + j to duplicate this layer. Rotate the duplicate layer with (edit > transform > rotate 180) from the menu, and then set the blending mode to exclusion, and the opacity to 70%.
Now just crop the image to the size you want. I have cropped this image to 520x520 so the original image bounds don't exceed the final image. At this point, feel free to be as creative as you like, like adding color to the face of Angelina as I have, or add your own creative touches.
Congratulations you're all done.

Wow Drixer, that is a really great tutorial, thanks for sharing it.
September 12th, 2006 at 2:48 pmHi Rich,
You are welcome. I find this type of effect useful for symbolizing a metaphor of transition such as a person going through some life-changing event or something.
September 14th, 2006 at 2:45 pmdrixer, hi i really really love the tutorial with angelina jolie emerging from the water and i have all the steps done exactly as you say in the tutorial, but step 7…when i do what you say…my image doesn’t look like the image below step 7 does. all the rest is fine except that and thats the most important part of the picture because it gives the illusion of the water around her face. I’m wondering if maybe the layers are in the wrong order?. i use photoshop CS2 and i really really want to get this picture done right. i am an aspiring graphic designer just learning a lot of new photoshop skills. but i want this one sooo bad…its awesome looking. please help me.
November 8th, 2006 at 9:21 pmHi jwsegnor,
I have updated step 7 with the layer name that needs to be selected. Selecting the correct layer here should resolve the problem you’re having.
November 8th, 2006 at 10:51 pmthanks for updating that…but i still am not getting the effect of the edge of water around her face. when i do the liquify filter and select layer 3….i get her face…but the liquid wont go over top, it is behind the face, so when i try to make an “edge” around the face….it doesnt work, the liquid just looks flat and it seems to be staying in the shape of the mask we created in one of the previous steps. the water is around her face…but it doesnt look real…it looks flat. if i could have an email, i could send you the screenshot of the problem i am having. i am sorry to bug you like that…but i love the picture and i would like to use it on other pictures. thanks a lot.
November 9th, 2006 at 10:00 amHi again jwsegnor,
I have updated this again with a style, and lighting effect I used. I also updated the levels adjustment to work with the lighting effect changes. I went through the steps as they are in the tutorial, and I am able to reproduce the result with these updates. Keep in mind that the water will never look the same since the cloud effect is random, but you should be able to achieve a similar result.
November 9th, 2006 at 7:19 pmhello. i`m stuck in step 4 i can`t find the backdrop check box in mi psp only appears two options not the one in the middle.. and when i made the quick mask selection it appears in color red.. i hope you can help me
November 11th, 2006 at 2:41 pmHi Brenda,
The quick mask does cause the mask to turn red, but after you select (filter > liquify) from the menu you should see a new window open that has the show backdrop section in the bottom right corner of the window. I noticed you said psp in your comment this tutorial is for Photoshop. I am also using Photoshop CS2, although I think earlier versions have the liquify filter as well.
November 11th, 2006 at 9:23 pmDrixer, I am having difficulties on the liquify part.
I am using Photoshop 7.0 and I see the backdrop and everything,
but I was just wondering if that would effect how the image
will turn out?
I too was stuck on #4.
“Now just drag the brush so the white portion lines up with inside the edges of the face, and click OK when finished. Now exit quick mask mode by pressing q on the keyboard again.”
I did not understand that part, because there were no brush for me to drag so the white portion would line up.
Also, for step #7, I do not have the “Mode:” section so my image did not turn out the way you said it should.
November 12th, 2006 at 7:54 amHi mskatay,
I’m not familiar with the liquify filter in Photoshop 7, but if it is the same filter all should work fine. The backdrop section won’t affect the outcome; it is only required to see the current layer in relation to another layer. The brush I referred to in step #4 can be found in the top left of the liquify filter window. I think it’s called the forward warp tool. The mode section just puts the backdrop layer in front of or behind the current layer. This is most likely always ‘in front’ if Photoshop 7 doesn’t have it.
November 12th, 2006 at 9:12 amDrixer,
November 12th, 2006 at 1:04 pmSooo, I use the warp tool then…hmm
How come her face seems to be WHITE when you are warping?
When I go into the liquify format, her face does not turn
white like that image shown.
Thanks, I think I understand what the use of the warp tool is supposed to do..
November 12th, 2006 at 1:18 pmIt’s supposed to help us get the lasso around her face more accurately right?
Hmm, in that case I think I did it correctly..
Drixer,
November 12th, 2006 at 2:26 pmHow do we use the lighting effect? I can’t seem to load it into
my Photoshop.
Hi mskatay,
If you extract the ‘Liquid Highlights’ file into your Photoshop lighting styles folder as mentioned in step 1 you should see the ‘Liquid Highlights’ option in the styles list for step 8. Since you are using a different version then I am, the folder indicated in step 1 will be different for you.
November 13th, 2006 at 12:50 amim stuck on step 5 when i create a new layer do i highlight all of the thumbnails in the pallette or just one? either way when i go to modify it only lets me access border not contract?
any help chinnyman@yahoo.com
December 21st, 2006 at 10:14 amafter i exit quick mask do u keep the photo higlighted coz it wont copy a layer if its highlighted for me it can copy a blank one when u un select
December 21st, 2006 at 10:17 amHi chinnyman,
When you press ctrl + j in step 5 a new layer should be created from the selection that was created in quick mask mode. Doing this should also highlight the newly created layer. Then when you ctrl + click the thumbnail for this layer a selection should be made for it allowing the rest of the steps to be executed.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:37 pmThis tutorial doesn’t work. The water effect is wrong explained. The whole achievement is disordered. Why not create one effect after another?
For the water effect:
1.
Set your foreground color to #808080 and the background color to black (#000000).
2.
Select (layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation) from the menu, check the colorize box, set the hue to 215, the saturation to 100, the lighness +40 then click OK.
3.
December 27th, 2006 at 1:00 pmNext select (layer > new adjustment layer > levels) from the menu, and set the input values to 50, 1.00, and 170, and click OK.
Hi azumi_mm,
I’m not sure what the problem you are having is, if I follow the steps as I’ve ordered them everything works as expected.
December 27th, 2006 at 9:49 pmI don’t quite understand your wording for step 6. “Ctrl + click the thumbnail for the second layer from the top, select the top layer, and then select ” what does that mean select the thumbnail FOR the second layer from the top?. It’d help if u named each layer or took screen shots of which layer to click on.
January 1st, 2007 at 12:52 pmHi coolade,
Where it says ctrl + click the thumbnail for the second layer from the top it means the layer just below the top layer, and when you ctrl + click the thumbnail on that layer it will create a selection from the content of the layer. The area of the thumbnail is the little square on the left side of the layer in the layers palette. I’m not sure if this is the part you didn’t understand or not, if it isn’t let me know and I’ll try to clarify the section you are having problems with.
January 2nd, 2007 at 4:46 amHey Dxiver my english is not very good i sign registration this site for you
this tutorial is very cool how are you find this really amazing first thanks second i have a question how can i make angelina jolie’s eyes and lips like your tutorial
January 28th, 2007 at 6:12 amHi Shadowlord,
I generally add color to a black and white image by creating a new layer and either setting the blend mode to color, soft light, or overlay, then I paint the color over the areas I want to add color to.
